Political crisis deepens in France - Prime Minister Lecornu resigns after cabinet appointment
France's new Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu, has resigned, just 14 hours after naming his new cabinet. The swift resignation was unexpected and unprecedented, further deepening the political crisis in France.
The far-right National Rally party immediately called on President Emmanuel Macron to call early parliamentary elections.
After weeks of consultations with political parties, Lecornu, a close ally of Macron, named his ministers on Sunday and they were to hold their first cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon.
But the new cabinet composition angered both opponents and allies, who saw it as either too right-wing or not right-wing enough, raising doubts about the government's durability. It comes at a time when France is deeply embroiled in a political crisis, with no group holding a majority in parliament.
Lecornu submitted his resignation to the President on Monday morning. French politics has become increasingly unstable since Macron's re-election in 2022, due to the lack of a party or grouping with a parliamentary majority.
The French leader's decision to call early parliamentary elections last year deepened the crisis, further fragmenting parliament. Lecornu, who was appointed only last month, was Macron's fifth prime minister in two years.
"There can be no return to stability without new elections and the dissolution of the National Assembly," said official sources of the National Rally.
