Over 1 billion euros for chips in Germany - American company aims to expand

American chipmaker GlobalFoundries announced that it will invest 1.1 billion euros to expand production capacity at its German facility.

The investment at the Dresden location will increase production capacity to exceed one million tiles per year by the end of 2028, the company said in a statement.

“As part of the project, the facility will be upgraded to provide European processes and data flows that meet critical security requirements,” GlobalFoundries added.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hailed the project as an important investment for Europe's future, amid geopolitical tensions affecting the semiconductor market.

"We are witnessing a tectonic shift in the world's political and economic centers of power," he said, adding that Germany wants to be a key player in microelectronics to maintain the country's well-being and security.

The expansion project, called SPRINT, is expected to be supported by the German federal government and the State of Saxony within the framework of the European Chip Law.

GlobalFoundries added that European Union approval for the full program is expected later this year.

The German government will support the expansion of the production site with several hundred million euros, according to reports in the Handelsblatt newspaper.

The company has invested more than 10 billion euros in the Dresden location since 2009.
