Old cars, on the way out - When and which vehicles will "retire"

A plan for the gradual withdrawal of old vehicles at the European Union level is being promoted, with the aim of limiting pollutant emissions and modernizing the fleet. The new European policy emphasizes improving air quality and protecting the environment, as old vehicles are a major source of pollution, especially in large urban centers.

Greece, which has one of the oldest fleets in Europe, with an average vehicle age of 17.3 years, is expected to be at the center of the changes. Replacing old cars is considered necessary, as many of them no longer meet modern environmental standards.

According to the European Union, the recall will include vehicles that meet certain specific conditions.

Immobility: Vehicles that remain out of circulation for an extended period of time will be considered waste and will be sent for scrapping.

Technical inspection: Vehicles that have not passed for two consecutive years, or that have not passed the inspection without being repaired, will be compulsorily withdrawn from circulation.

Cost of repair: If the repair of serious damage, such as that to an engine or gearbox, exceeds the value of the vehicle, it will be recommended that it be scrapped.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has proposed a phased calendar, which is expected to be approved by the EU and provides for:

Year 2026: Withdrawal of Euro 1 vehicles.

Year 2030: Withdrawal of Euro 2 vehicles.

Year 2034: Withdrawal of Euro 3 vehicles.

Year 2039: Withdrawal of Euro 4 vehicles.

Year 2043: Withdrawal of Euro 5 vehicles.

Year 2050: Withdrawal of Euro 6 vehicles.

Based on this calendar, the EU aims to gradually eliminate the most polluting vehicles, encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies and fleet renewal across Europe.
