Europe, 22 billion euros for the space plan - The program aims to strengthen the autonomy of the continent

The European Space Agency (ESA), the European equivalent of NASA, is seeking €22 billion from member states over the next three years. The agency will present a €1.35 billion proposal for a new program aimed at strengthening and synchronizing defense capabilities in space.
This is the first time that ESA, a civilian organization founded in 1975 and which has shunned military projects, has entered the sector. The proposed budget is 36% larger than the previous one, as countries expand their military presence in space.
Europe is seeking to increase defense spending in response to Russia's war in Ukraine and pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. Space agency leaders have proposed a program called "European Space Resilience" for the joint use of national space assets by member states.
“The source of funding is changing. In the future, funding for space activities will increasingly come from defense ministries, whereas previously, at least in Europe, it came mainly from civilian ministries,” the leaders said.
The program will use projects such as Iris2, the EU's alternative to Starlink, Elon Musk and SpaceX's satellite network, as well as Galileo, the European satellite navigation framework, similar to the American Global Positioning System (GPS). The target users are the defense community, police forces and civil protection agencies.
The proposal will be reviewed and then voted on by the heads of the space programs of the United Kingdom, France, Italy and other countries during a meeting of the Ministerial Council of the European Space Agency.
