40,000 free train tickets for 18-year-olds/ EU reopens “DiscoverEU”

One of the European Commission's most emblematic initiatives is back with a bang, offering 40,000 free train tickets to 18-year-olds, with the aim of discovering Europe through a journey of experiences, culture and mobility. The DiscoverEU programme, which has already been embraced by tens of thousands of young people in previous years, strengthens young people's connection to European identity, while promoting sustainable travel via the rail network.

The new call is addressed to young people born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008, who are invited to apply via the European Youth Portal, by answering a short questionnaire about the European Union. The selection process, beyond its competitive nature, also functions as a first step in getting to know the institutions and values of Europe.

The selected candidates will have the opportunity to travel for up to one month, during a period spanning from July 2026 to September 2027. This trip is not just a tourist experience. It is an opportunity for personal development, autonomy and intercultural understanding. Participants can design their own itinerary or follow thematic proposals, such as cultural itineraries combining architecture, arts, music and contemporary design.

Particular importance is given to inclusion and equality. Young people with disabilities, health problems or from socially and economically vulnerable backgrounds receive additional support, ensuring that this experience is truly accessible to all. At the same time, the programme is not limited to the Member States of the European Union, but also extends to the countries participating in Erasmus+, strengthening the interconnectedness of the wider European community.

This initiative is part of a wider European Union strategy to increase sustainable mobility. The train is promoted as the most environmentally friendly means of transport, contributing to reducing emissions and promoting a greener travel model. Through DiscoverEU, Europe is not just offering a travel ticket, but is investing in a new generation of citizens who will experience the meaning of European unity in practice.
