25% of cars in Europe are electric - France and Germany drove growth in July
Registrations of battery electric vehicles in Europe continued to rise in July, accounting for more than one in four new units sold. Strong growth in France and Germany offset weaker demand in several other markets.
Registrations of battery electric vehicles in 16 major European markets rose 13.6% year-on-year to 224,266 units in July, giving fully electric cars a market share of 25.7%, the data showed.
Nearly 1.5 million electric vehicles have been registered across Europe so far this year, 30% more than the same period in 2025, highlighting the continued momentum in the region's transition to electric mobility.
France achieved a 35% electric vehicle market share in July with 44,378 registrations, while Germany's share increased to 29.3% with 78,609 registrations.
The Nordic and Benelux markets remained at the top of Europe, led by Denmark with 80.1%, followed by Finland (52.6%), the Netherlands (47.3%), Belgium (42.8%) and Sweden (42.6%).
Italy's share of electric vehicles fell to 5.9% from 10.1% in June, after previous incentives expired, while Poland and the Czech Republic remained among the markets with the fewest electric vehicles in Europe at 4% and 7.5% respectively.
According to experts, electric cars remain one of Europe's biggest success stories in 2026 and governments need to implement sustainable and predictable policies to stay part of this growth.
