Underwater tunnel that will connect the US with Russia/ Trump: It seems like an interesting proposal, we will have to think about it
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that a Russian proposal to Elon Musk and his tunneling company, the Boring Company, to build an underwater rail link through the Bering Strait was interesting. “That’s an interesting proposal,” Trump said when asked about the construction of the tunnel suggested by Russia, which would connect the two countries in Alaska. “We’ll have to think about it, I hadn’t heard it before,” Trump added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was not happy with the idea of building the tunnel at this time. Kirill Dimitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s investment envoy, suggested in a post on Musk’s X platform that the project would be partially financed by Moscow. Dimitriev said it would be “a 70-mile, or 112-kilometer, rail link that would symbolize unity between the two countries.”
Normally, such a tunnel would cost about $65 billion to build, said Dimitriev, who is also the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund. But he added that Elon Musk's Boring Company and the technology it uses could potentially cut costs to $8 billion and complete the project in eight years.
Dimitriev's suggestion followed a phone call between Trump and Putin, during which plans were made for a possible resolution to the Ukraine war. Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other top advisers would meet with a Russian delegation before Trump and Putin meet in Budapest. Musk did not respond to a request for comment on the proposal.
Building an underwater tunnel across the Bering Strait would require Musk's Boring Company to work in sub-zero temperatures, in a region with no existing infrastructure and frequent earthquakes. The Boring Company has no experience working in such extreme conditions.
