OpenAI in talks with Amazon - Targeted investment of over $10 billion for AI chips

OpenAI is in talks with Amazon about a potential investment and a deal to use its artificial intelligence chips. Details are still unclear and could change, but the investment could exceed $10 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter.
These discussions come after a restructuring of OpenAI in October and after the company formalized its partnership with Microsoft, giving it more freedom to raise capital and collaborate with other firms within the ecosystem.
Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI and has supported it since 2019, but it no longer has the right to be the primary provider of computing power for OpenAI, according to an October announcement. The startup can now also develop products with third parties.
Amazon has invested at least $8 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic, but the e-commerce giant could increase its share of the generative artificial intelligence market. Microsoft made a similar move and announced last month that it would invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Nvidia will invest up to $10 billion in the startup.
Amazon Web Services has been designing AI chips since 2015, and the hardware has become essential for companies trying to train models and cope with the growing demand for computing power. Amazon announced the Inferentia chips in 2018 and the latest generation of Trainium chips earlier this month.
OpenAI has made more than $1.4 trillion in infrastructure commitments in recent months, including deals with chipmakers Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom. Last month, the startup signed a deal to buy $38 billion in capacity from Amazon Web Services, its first contract with the cloud infrastructure leader.
In October, OpenAI finalized a secondary stock sale totaling $6.6 billion, allowing current and former employees to sell shares worth $500 billion.
