China owns over 11,000 German patents - One in three inventions developed in
China has taken ownership of more than 11,300 patents developed in Germany over the past two decades, according to a study by the German Economic Institute commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation. Almost one in three inventions developed in Germany are owned by a foreign entity. Of these, almost a third are held by American owners and about 11% by Swiss owners, the study showed.

The change is particularly pronounced in mechanical engineering, where patent applications rose to 4,300 in 2022 from 3,300 in 2000. According to the study, China had been particularly active in acquiring technologies in this sector.

Beijing strategically targeted Western acquisitions while keeping its own market relatively closed to foreign investors. According to the study's authors, this is an imbalance and Europe should take a closer look at where strategically important technologies are migrating.

Germany's domestic innovation strength is weakening due to insufficient investment in research and development. Germany ranked third in the world in terms of R&D spending in 2000, when its spending was twice as high as China's, but had fallen to sixth place by 2021.

China, by contrast, has increased its R&D spending twentyfold over that period, the institute said.
