“220 million paid users” - OpenAI aims to multiply ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has predicted that at least 220 million weekly users of ChatGPT will pay for a subscription by 2030, The Information reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

According to projections, 8.5% of the estimated 2.6 billion weekly users, or about 220 million people, are expected to subscribe, making ChatGPT one of the largest subscription businesses in the world.

As of July, about 35 million users, or roughly 5% of ChatGPT's weekly active base, have paid for the "Plus" or "Pro" plans, priced at $20 and $200 per month, respectively, the report said.

While the startup's annual revenue is expected to reach about $20 billion by the end of this year, the company's losses are growing, sources have told Reuters.

The Information reported in September that OpenAI had generated about $4.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025, about 16% more than in the entire previous year, while spending $2.5 billion, mostly on ChatGPT research and development costs.

OpenAI expects about 20% of its revenue to come from new products, such as shopping-oriented features and advertising. This week, the company introduced a personal shopping assistant for ChatGPT, a move that could pave the way for revenue through advertising or commissions on sales.
