White House opens official TikTok account - Trump administration expands communication through Chinese platform
The White House officially opened a TikTok account, aiming to leverage the app's more than 150 million American users to spread President Donald Trump's messages.
The American leader has expressed sympathy for this popular app, praising the support of young voters during his victory against Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election.
Previous intelligence assessments have warned that the app's owners are influenced by the Chinese government and that TikTok could be used to influence Americans.
“The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes that President Trump has brought to the American people on as many platforms and to as broad an audience as possible,” White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said as the account went live. “President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during the presidential campaign. We are excited to build on that success and communicate like no other administration has before,” she added.
The account, called @whitehouse, launched Tuesday night and aims to communicate the president's policies, a White House official said. The move is seen as a significant shift in the US government's communications strategy, although TikTok's potential to be used as a tool for political influence remains a continuing concern.
A 2024 law required TikTok to stop operating by January 19 of this year unless ByteDance sold the app’s assets in the U.S. Trump decided not to enforce the law after he began his second term as president on January 20. He first extended the deadline until early April, then until June 19 and again until September 17. Those delays have drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue that the Trump administration is violating the law and ignoring national security concerns about Chinese control over TikTok.
